Counting down to the combine, I am back with a hopefully improved 7 round mock draft with compensatory picks. You can check out my previous mocks here:
As always any feedback is welcome, whether you like the pick, hate the pick, disagree or just generally want to know more of the prospect that is drafted to your team. You can also comment what team won the draft, who lost it etc. The mock draft is based on my views and where I have them ranked, so if you think I have a prospect ranked way too high/low tell me and I'll explain why I feel that way. If you also feel it's weird that a certain prospect has not made it into my 7 round mock draft, tell me and I'll answer that I've either not watched him enough to form an opinion or don't feel the prospect is worthy of a top 7 round selection. The picks are based on my big board, so certain prospects are ranked differently than certain experts like Matt Miller, Jeremiah and McShay. I'll explain each pick for the first round, and if you want an explanation on your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th , 7th or compensatory pick I'll answer in the comment section.
Round 1: 1.1.
Titans: Laremy Tunsil, Ole Miss, Left Tackle
Number one priority for the Titans is protecting their franchise quarterback. With Tunsil they get someone to protect Mariotas blind side.
1.2.
Browns: Jared Goff, Cal, Quarterback
Cleveland Browns aren't gonna get stability before they fix the quarterback position. Even if they have failed a lot of times, they now turn to a safe prospect. Read
this if you wonder why I feel Jared Goff is gonna be a franchise quarterback.
1.3.
Chargers: Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame, Left Tackle
The Chargers have many needs, both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. There is no denying that they have a bigger need on the defensive line, but they also need to protect their franchise QB. They address the offensive line in the first round, and pick up defensive linemen later in the draft. It all comes down to value.
1.4.
Cowboys: Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida, Cornerback
Cowboys get the choice between VH3 and Bosa, and choose VH3 as he is in a major position of need. Having Gregory and Lawrence occupying the DE spots, VH3 starts day one at cornerback. One of the best cornerbacks to come out in recent time, with the only question mark being his height. He'll bring a swagger needed to the Cowboys defense.
1.5.
Jaguars: Joey Bosa, Ohio State, 4-3 DE
Jaguars get a great player to put on the defensive line. Not an elite prospect, but a very safe and good prospect. Will form an awesome end tandem with his fellow rookie Dante Fowler Jr.
1.6 .
Ravens: Jalen Ramsey, Florida State, Free Safety
I wanted to go Noah Spence, but Jalen Ramsey made a lot of sense. Turns the Legiom of whom into a recognizable unit.
1.7.
49ers: Noah Spence, Eastern Kentucky, 3-4 OLB
The 49ers have many needs, but fixing the pass rush is a major key this off season. With Noah Spence they are one step closer and get the best speed rusher in the draft.
1.8.
Dolphins: Jaylon Smith, Notre Dame, 4-3 LB
The Dolphins defense need someone who can cover. Jaylon Smith fits this description well and will help the Dolphins a lot covering the middle.
1.9.
Bucs: Mackensie Alexander, Clemson, Cornerback
The Bucs need to invest in their defense after focusing heavily on offense the last few years. They go BPA and grab Mac Alexander. Lockdown corner, who will help the Bucs defense a lot.
1.10.
Giants: Myles Jack, UCLA, 4-3 LB
The Giants needs, like the Dolphins, someone who can cover the middle. Myles Jack is versatile and gives the Giants defense a lot of different opportunities.
1.11.
Bears: Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss, 3-4 DE
The Bears grab arguably the most talented player in the draft. Everyone knows he is talented, but it is down to the Bears management to keep him out of trouble. If they'll get an absolute force who will create havoc for the NFC North Quarterbacks.
1.12.
Saints: Andrew Billings, Baylor, 4-3 DT
When your biggest need is also the best player on the board it's probably the easiest pick the Saints will make. Billings is a monster who will help that shite Saints defense against the run while providing double teams in the passing game.
1.13.
Eagles: Shilique Calhoun, Michigan State, 4-3 DE
Some might say this is a questionable pick, but Calhoun fills a big need for the Eagles and is a great player. They don't want to use their first round pick on a right tackle, don't want another WR in the first round and they have enough runningbacks.
1.14.
Raiders: Jack Conklin, Michigan State, Left tackle
Oakland gets Donald Penns replacement and day one starter.
1.15.
Rams: LaQuon Treadwell, Ole Miss, Wide Receiver
Treadwell and the Rams are a match made in heaven.
1.16.
Lions: Zeke Elliott, Ohio State, Running back
With an awful running game they need to build a running game to take the pressure of Stafford. Zeke is that guy.
1.17.
Falcons:Shaq Lawson, Clemson, 4-3 DE
Getting pressure on the quarterback is essential, Lawson is good vs the run and will provide pass rush from the edge.
1.18.
Colts: Su'a Cravens, USC 3-4 ILB
Colts need help all over the defense, and Cravens fills one of the inside linebacker positions. He is versatile and can be used in a lot of different sets, which will help the Colts defensive coordinator game plan dependent on the match up. With two new young QBs in the division, and a possible third, a beast in the passing game is a must.
1.19.
Bills: Deforest Buckner, Oregon, 3-4 DE
The Bills fill a need by grabbing Buckner who will set the edge in the running game as well as providing some pass rush.
1.20.
Jets: Shon Coleman, Auburn, Right tackle
The Jets fill two needs in one pick. They get an automatic upgrade over whatever they call that right tackle of theirs, and they fill a future need at left tackle for whenever Da Brick is retiring.
1.21.
Redskins: Tyler Boyd, Pitt, Wide Receiver
The Redskins continue building a strong passing game, and grab the best wide receiver on the board. Boyd can play outside, in the slot and line up in the back field, giving their new franchise QB a safety weapon who will take pressure of the rest of the WR core.
1.22.
Texans: Paxton Lynch, Memphis, Quarterback
We all saw Brian Hoyer in that play off game. Ugly stuff. Lynch will sit and learn before taking over the keys, and hopefully finally giving the Texans some stability at QB.
1.23.
Vikings: Jason Spriggs, Indiana, Left tackle
The Vikings grab an exciting new tackle to take over for Matt 'mediocre' Kalil.
1.24.
Bengals: Reggie Ragland, Alabama, 4-3 SLB
Bengals grab a strong side linebacker who fills a need. Continue building that linebacker core.
1.25.
Steelers: Hunter Henry, Arkansas, Tight End
With no player that fills any needs, the Steelers go BPA and grab Hunter Henry. Yes they do have Jesse James, but that doesn't mean they don't want another tight end which will be deadly over the middle. They also get the opportunity to run more two tight end sets, and will give the pass happy Steeler offense a lot of opportunities.
1.26.
Seahawks: Sheldon Rankins, Louisville, 4-3 3T
Seahawks and Rankins is a match made in heaven. Fits the typical Seahawks player.
1.27.
Packers: Jarran Reed, Alabama, 3-4 NT
With three potential targets gone in the three picks before the Packer pick, Jarran Reed is drafted to stop the run.
1.28.
Chiefs: Jonathan Bullard Florida 3-4 DE
Bullard is a raw prospect, but a lot of upside that will help one of the already strong front sevens in the league.
1.29.
Cardinals: A'Shawn Robinson Alabama 3-4 NT/DE
With no outside linebacker available, they grab A'Shawn who is a beast in the run game, and will take strides and learn behind Calais how to pass rush. Can line up as a nose tackle or a defensive end.
Patriots:1 Pick forfeited.
1.30.
Panthers: Emmanuel Ogbah Oklahoma State 4-3 DE
BPA and a need fill? Sounds good to me.
1.31.
Broncos: Jerald Hawkins, LSU, Tackle
The Denver offensive line is horrible, and hopefully drafting Hawkins gives the new quarterback a chance to survive.
Round 2: 2.32.
Browns: Michael Thomas, Ohio State, Wide Receiver
2.33.
Titans: Kendall Fuller, Virginia Tech, Cornerback
2.34.
Cowboys: Will Fuller, Notre Dame, Wide Receiver
2.35.

The final two contestants are ready for battle. But before we take a look at the final battle, let's look at how some of the other contestants did (Only focusing on the notable ones):
Virginia Cavaliers - You were the overall #1 seed. You had this tournament in the bag. Yet you blew it. Again. You made history by becoming the first #1 seed to fall victim to a #16 seed. University of Maryland-Baltimore County...really? This was your most embarrassing loss since 1989 when Glen Rice and Michigan whooped your ass by almost 40 points in the Elite Eight. Everyone laughs as your Legacy of Failure continues.
Arizona Wildcats - You got tea-bagged by a mid-major school in Buffalo in the first round. Plus, your team is facing sanctions and could be prohibited from participating in the big dance for a couple years. You're fucked.
Miami Hurricanes - Well, Miami, you were the first victim of the upset zombie apocalypse that took place on the left side of the bracket. Loyola-Chicago (indirectly) injected most of the lower seeded teams, and then themselves, with the T-Virus and then the lower seeds devoured approximately 95% of the higher seeds on the left side of the bracket. The good news is that you weren't the only victims, Miami, Virginia, and Arizona.
Tennessee Volunteers - Tennessee, you were the next victim of the zombie apocalypse. You had a lead going into the final seconds. You were about to hop on a helicopter ride out of Raccoon Cit-the Second Round and to the Sweet 16. But Loyola-Chicago grabbed you and then consumed your flesh for more power.
Cincinnati Bearcats - You went full Bungles and blew a 22-point lead to fucking Nevada. Did Marvin Lewis disguise himself as your head coach or something?
Nevada Wolfpack - Nevada, you had a good run. You almost became a victim of the zombie apocalypse in the First Round, but you fought back like the S.T.A.R.S. team and defeated Texas in OT. However, the zombies from Loyola-Chicago consumed your flesh in the Sweet 16. But seriously, great season, and hopefully you'll be back next year.
Kentucky Wildcats - Ah, another team that I and many others can't stand has fallen victim to the zombie apocalypse. You got analraped by the other (T-Virus infected) Wildcats in Kansas State. It's always a good day when John Calipari is denied another championship.
Bucknell Bison - God damn it, Bucknell, you had ONE FUCKING JOB. To make us laugh like we have never laughed before. You staged a furious comeback, plus the Spartans tried desperately to hand you the game, but you fucked it up. I can't even look at you anymore, get out of my sight. It would have been hilarious for Michigan State to choke in the first round again.
Wichita State Shockers - Wichita State, what did you do? How did you get killed by a team that had never won a tournament game before? That Final Four hangover from 2013 is still hurting you, eh? Did Marshall get infected with the T-Virus as well?
Ohio State Buckeyes - Thad Matta is finally gone, and Chris Holtmann has brought the Buckeyes back to relevance. They had a strong regular season...only to get thwarted by last year's runner up in Gonzaga in the second round, and all of Ann Arbor pleasured itself to their demise.
North Carolina Tar Heels - How did you get stomped by Texas A&M in the second round? You were the defending champs! You had all the pieces necessary for another title run. Sure, A&M was playing the game of their lives, but the Tar Heels didn't bother to show up. Oh well. You'll be back in the Final Four soon enough. The Tar Heels never stay down for long.
San Diego State Aztecs - Thanks to the T-Virus, the Aztecs have a late lead and are about to completely consume the flesh of Houston. But then they fell to Rob Grey and Houston at the Buzzer. Try again next year! Fuck you, Spanos!
Houston Cougars -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47W42BPvU4o Nothing I say will eclipse the amount of pain you are feeling right now. A moment of silence for Rob Grey and Devin Davis...
Michigan State Spartans - All I heard from Spartan fans and on sports radio in Detroit before the tournament started was how State was going to win it all. How this was Tom Izzo's "Best Team Ever". How they were going to win the National Title in the blink of an eye. Turns out they forgot about their opposition - the last team in the tournament, #11 seed Syracuse. They completely shut you down for the last 5 minutes of the game on your home turf. That is why you don't count your chickens before they hatch. Remember when you mocked Michigan's "Rise to the Occasion" slogan during the 2014 Rose Bowl? Remember all the shit you gave Michigan fans for their football team being in shambles last year? Remember all that trash talking you did after Michigan botched that punt?
Karma's a total bitch, ain't it?
Purdue Boilermakers - God damn, Purdue must have horrible luck. They had a strong season, sure, but their star player, Issac Haas, got injured in the first round, and this team couldn't make it past the Sweet 16. Sadly, the Legacy of Failure lives on for the Washington Capitals of the Big Ten.
Texas Tech Red Raiders - God damn it, I wanted you guys to make the Final Four. Too bad the basketball gods did not smile upon you. You couldn't do anything to stop the red-hot Nova offense. And in the end you got smoked. But seriously, great season, and hopefully you'll be back next year. Fucking Nova.
Duke Blue Devils - Duke, what the hell was that supposed to be? You had what it took to defeat Kansas, you had a better team than they did! This was Grayson Allen's last year with you and you blew it. For fucks sake, Kansas was literally HANDING you this game on a silver platter and yet you still collapsed against them in OT. And at least 29 other fanbases are pleasuring themselves to your demise.
I jinxed them, didn't I? But oh well, you'll be back soon enough. The Blue Devils never stay down for long.
Florida State Seminoles - Seminoles, you blew it. Even when Michigan was trying their best to hand you this game on a silver platter you still managed to choke it away. You overcame a 10-point deficit TWICE, you even had the refs on your side. Yet you blew it. However, you had a great season. Next year, if you make it back to the Elite Eight, try not to choke in big situations.
Loyola-Chicago Ramblers - They're going to do it. Sister Jean cast Bahamut Zero on Michigan and the Ramblers have a 10-point lead with 12 minutes remaining! But then they blew it. Come on, Michigan was trying to give you this game, they didn't want to make it this far! A 38-10 run? You should be ashamed. You let Moe Wagner do whatever the hell he wanted. But, I will say this: Great season. Try to make it back next year.
Kansas Jayhawks - Turns out that the game against Duke was one that the Jayhawks weren't supposed to win. Seriously. The win against Duke was the WORST thing to happen to you guys. Your team's biggest issue right now is coaching. That win allowed the athletic directors to sit on their lazy asses and pretend that everything is fine. Villanova sniped your rotting corpse from 3-point range as you played some of the WORST defense I had ever seen. I hadn't seen a team since Auburn give zero fucks like you have and not even try to be competitive. Is this team EVER going to become a dynasty? No? Fuck this team.
Anyway, let's move on to the final two contestants. Representing the Big East:
Villanova Wildcats Theme song for Nova:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_3UeBTHEkI&index=11&list=PL58D398750F1219D8 Villanova has returned to the National Championship game for the second time in three years. What a completely shocking turn of events. Let me put on my stunned face for this one: "Yay." Everyone and their mother could have predicted Nova making the title game since the season began. To nobody's surprise, Nova's red hot offense demolished the likes of Alabama, West Virginia, Texas Tech, and Kansas to get here, all of which are good opponents, but Villanova made them all look like high school teams, showing no mercy or restraint as they won each of those games by double digits. They also set the Final Four record for most three pointers with 18. And they're doing all this with only four members left from the 2016 championship team! Stars like Jalen Brunson, Omari Spellman, and Eric Paschall lead this offensive juggernaut looking for it's third National Title. Head coach Jay Wright has turned this team into a juggernaut that will be unstoppable for years to come. North Carolina learned this the hard way in 2016. As menacing as they look, you have to respect a team like this. Especially in a sport like college basketball, where it's very hard to stay on top for a long period of time. Even if Nova doesn't win it all this year, expect them to be Final Four contenders for at least the next 5 years. If they stay contenders for longer than that, who knows, but you do not want to overlook them.
And it turns out that the Wildcats are facing an opponent from the Big Ten this year. Who could it possibly be?
Michigan Wolverines Theme song for Michigan:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1xYc7jmz84 (No subtitles, unfortunately)
Michigan. Huh. Ya made it. You didn't fall victim to the zombie apocalypse of upsets on the first half of the bracket. You also haven't gone Full Beilein...yet. You made it despite looking like shit and on the verge of death for 4 games too. Impressive. Even after being left for dead during the regular season, as well as against Houston, Florida State and Loyola-Chicago, you have overcome all odds this tournament. The "experts" like Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith had them being upset by said teams as well, unsurprisingly. The Wolverines are riding into the championship game on a 14-game winning streak thanks to their stellar defense. Though their offense hasn't been the best, their brutal defense has shown no mercy. This team is the god damn Tyranid. No matter how many of them you kill off, they will keep coming at you until you are defeated and your resources are sucked dry. Michigan is led by German big man, and junior Moritz Wagner, a star who is on a mission, who has broken the defenses of Texas A&M and Loyola-Chicago with his excellent pick-and-roll plays. He also had a double-double in Saturday's game as well. He may not be Glen Rice but he he sure as hell has played like him. Other stars like Duncan Robinson, Isaiah Livers and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman have carried this Michigan team offensively as well. And though his free-throw shooting has been garbage, Xavier Simpson has also been solid too. Another star you shouldn't overlook is freshman Jordan Poole, who has bailed this Michigan team out in crucial situations, like against Houston where he hit the game winner in the final seconds. This may not be the '89 squad, but this is a team to be reckoned with. They are like the 2004 Detroit Pistons - the definition of an underdog. A team that was dismissed and shoved aside by the media, but has overcome all odds to make it to the biggest stage in College Basketball. If the Knight Sabers of Bubblegum Crisis were a basketball team, this is what they would look like.
Will we see Ann Arbor happily rioting in the streets, or Ann Arbor angrily rioting in the streets?
Will Michigan put an end to the Curse of the Fab Five? Or will it hit them like it did in 1992, 1993 and 2013?
Will Michigan finally end 3 decades of misery? Or will they be victimized by Villanova again like they were in the second round of the 1985 tournament?
It's Ann Arbor vs. Philadelphia for the National Title!
Who will win?
EPIC TITLE GAME JINXING...SORT OF I'm not buying the oddsmakers on this one. I believe that this will be a very close game, especially if the Michigan D plays as well as it has as of late. Moritz Wagner is going to have the game on his shoulders. If he can play as well as he did against Texas A&M and Loyola-Chicago, then Michigan will have a much easier time. Also keeping the Nova offense off the 3-point line as much as possible would help a lot too. But considering how good Spellman and Brunson have been, as well as Nova's offense, it's likely that this game could go into an overtime...or two.
I can't say that either team is a definite winner. I feel that this game, whoever wins, will be decided by at least 1-3 points. In overtime as well. It's pretty much anyone's game at this point. And no matter who I pick to win, I will be accused of jinxing a team and/or home state bias.
And on that note, enjoy tomorrow's game. Hope it's a classic.
